An unusual heat-resistant mat

Walnut shells, they are resistant and woody, what could you do with this material that we would normally throw away? Got it: a nice heat-resistant mat!

Here is what you need:

  • a wood, cork, or ceramic base, in the shape you prefer
  • walnut shells opened exactly in half
  • heat-resistant glue
  • enamels, acrylic colours, and/or glitter to decorate the shells
  • transparent spray paint resistant to high temperatures

The steps are very easy and you can safely involve kids.

Start by colouring and decorating the walnut shells as you like, then let them dry well.

Then attach them to the wooden base (or other types of it) using the heat-resistant glue.

Once the glue has dried, you can spray the clear varnish, which will protect your masterpiece from the heat.

In addition to having recycled a precious material, you have also created a useful and cute object, which will impress your guests every time you bring it to the table!
