Why eat nuts all year round

The experts keep telling us: nuts should be eaten all year round.

Nuts can help when we’re feeling particularly exhausted: with the right amount, in fact, these precious foods can provide the right energy to face the day,

turning out to be an excellent mid-morning or afternoon snack.

As we are reminded by Dr. Elisabetta Macorsini, nutritional biologist for Humanitas Mater Domini and Humanitas Medical Care in Monza and Arese, nuts are defined as “oily” or “lipid fruit”. However, these are good, unsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (especially the Omega-6 and Omega-3), which help lower blood cholesterol levels and limit the risk of cardiovascular disease.

They contain very little water, few sugars, and a fair amount of protein, but are rich in vitamin B and E. They are also a source of mineral salts such as calcium, iron, selenium, magnesium, phosphorus, and copper.

The lack of gluten makes them suitable for those who suffer from celiac disease, but also vegetarians, vegans, and those who exercise.

Moreover, nuts contain a significant amount of fibre, which is essential for the proper functioning of our intestines.

A 30-gram portion a couple of times a week can be an excellent alternative to less healthy snacks.
